Pope Francis’ address to the UN General Assembly marks the first time the Pope has directly commented on fully autonomous weapons. In his address, the Pope states “lethal autonomous weapons…irreversibly alter the nature of warfare, detaching it further from human agency,” and calls on states to “break with the present climate of distrust” that is leading to “an erosion of multilateralism, which is all the more serious in light of the development of new forms of military technology.”
